Officials from Canada, Mexico, and China have expressed concerns over President-elect Donald Trump's intention to impose extensive tariffs on the United States’ three largest trading partners, warning that this could disrupt the economies of all four nations.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated, "One tariff will lead to another in retaliation, and this cycle could endanger our mutual businesses."
On Monday night, Trump announced plans to implement 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, along with a 10% tariff on goods from China. He justified these measures as efforts to combat drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicated he had contacted Trump shortly after the announcement. He also mentioned planning a meeting with Canada’s provincial leaders on Wednesday to discuss the potential repercussions and formulate a response.
